Lysosomes



What is a lysosome ?

-Lysosomes are cellular organelles that contain acid hydrolyse enzymes (proteases,lipases,nucleases and polysaccharidases) that break down waste materials and cellular debris.

- They can be described as the stomach of the cell and they are found in animal cells.


-Lysosomes a play important roles in cell upkeep, that are ranging from consuming worn-out structures within the cell to attacking foreign bacteria before it has a chance to penetrate the cells. 

- An lysosome needs an acidic environment to function properly, these organelles are encompassed in a membrane to ensure that they stay acidic.



-The cytoplasm acts as a buffer for organelles , protecting organelles from the shock of impact. This feature is especially important for the lysosome.. Lysosomes contain enzymes to break down a cell's waste. If cytoplasm was not present, the lysosome would likely rupture during impact, its released enzymes killing the entire cell.

*The pH within the lysosome is about pH 5, substantially less than that of the cytosol (~pH 7.2). All the enzymes in the lysosome work best at an acid pH. This reduces the risk of them digesting their own cell if they should escape from the lysosome.*



SOOO WHY IS THIS  lysosome so important in our cell ?
If a cell did not have any lysosomes or had a shortage of them, then the waste materials or damaged materials would build up, and eventually lead to infection and  later the death of the cell

 therefore there is necessity for the presence of lysosome as they will be able to prevent the build-up of waste materials because they contain enzymes that can break down these waste products.


How is the lysosome organelle manufactured in the cell ?



Lysosomes are manufactured by the Golgi apparatus, by budding, in the cell and the various digestive enzymes, that are present in the lysosomes are produced in the endoplasmic reticulum. These enzymes are then transported to the Golgi apparatus and are distributed to the lysosomes.
